This new melon bowl is hand coiled and traditionally fired outdoors. The wide ribs are symmetric and even. They are beautifully curved. A simple plain band divides the ribs from the opening of the jar. Since the piece is plain polished and fired outdoors, one can see the excellence in coloration and form. Many unique fire clouds appear. The added pine pitch and polishing it with a cotton cloth gives it this stunning finish. The shades of blacks and reds are so earthy. This is such a good example of a melon piece with the ribs pushed out from the inside. All of Samuel’s work is elegant and sophisticated.
