What a new and unique creation from Russell. We are calling it a “sampler box.” There is so much imagery being portrayed on all sides. One side has a beautiful incised bear in a medallion that has been embedded with hematite Heishi beads. There is a turquoise stone set in the center of the body. The reverse side has a medallion with a squash blossom incised, each one has a hematite bead. But this time, the bordering heishi is turquoise. So it is the opposite set of heishi and color work from the first panel. On either side panels are two different storm patterns – with mountains on one end. On the top of the box Russell has made a tight fitting lid – designed with a water serpent and clouds – where the rains would come down over the squash blossom. All the incised imagery relates a beautiful story. This is a wonderful gun metal fired new piece.
