This new black vase is so elegant. The main theme for this piece has to do with rain. The first thing you notice is the remarkable neck. Twisted and swirled, it is representing the forthcoming rain. Below the neck are two bands of embedded superfine hematite heishi. Beautifully incised in that band are geometric designs also representing rain. Below that border, running around the whole vase are four sun symbols. Russell was influenced in design work on this piece by Juan Cruz Roybal, the wonderful San Ildefonso potter. The other remarkable element on this vase is that Russell has polished so far down into the interior of the neck. So difficult to do, it blends into the polished rim. It is a beauty!
