Hand coiled, and painted with natural pigments, this is one of my favorite patterns that Paula paints. She calls it her “basket weave” design, and it reminds me of op-art. An eye dazzler, to be sure, the painting is so precise and intricate, it is outstanding. Paula started with this one particular Acoma design component, and then repeated it over and over covering the entire surface of the jar. Varying sizes of the pattern fit the shape masterfully.

Paula Estevan

Paula Estevan is just getting better and better as a potter, and a painter. Her painting is so precise and dazzling. Paula Estevan was born in 1967 and has been making pottery since 1986. Paula has over 20 years experience and her work exhibits such a very high degree of accomplishment. She is the daughter of Patsy Estevan- Mike. Her aunt is Marcia Estevan. She is a self-taught potter. She was inspired by her great grandmother, the well known potter, Mary Chino. Paula’s work is included in “Southern Pueblo Pottery: 2000 Artist Biographies” by Gregory Schaaf and “Pueblo and Navajo Contemporary Pottery” by Berger & Schiffer. Paula’s pots are exceptional examples of Acoma pottery. Her walls are remarkably thin.They are painted with native clay slips and bee-weed. She is known for selecting an Acoma design element and repeating it in a tight progressive pattern across the entire surface of the pot. This often creates creating an eye dazzling design. We are so pleased to have her work exhibited in our gallery.
