This new standing bear figure is wonderful. It is hand coiled by Lisa, and then decorated and painted by Harlan. They used Cochiti clay and natural paints on this piece, and then fired outdoors with cedar wood. Their free standing figures are so creatively designed. The figurative pottery is inspired by the old Cochiti tradition of human and animal forms They have made frogs, rabbits, and lizards, but this is our first bear. They are deeply rooted in tradition. Harlan explained to me, “I used a lot of leaf motifs when painting this piece. So it’s almost like a bear standing in a leafy meadow or something”.
