Each piece of pottery by Les Namingha is completely unique. His painting is remarkably original. Combining Native imagery with contemporary designs is one of his strengths as an artist. This new jar is no exception. The hand coiled jar is a lovely shape. This is description of the design elements. “This piece depicts three butterflies and a bird. The designs are painted with traditional Hopi -style elements. I chose the unique coloring of the Butterflies to represent shawls that Pueblo women wear during ceremonies. The bird and center mid-shoulder feather design are Pueblo influenced. The jar is painted with elements of colored lines to represent rainbows, and black-on-white areas to depict lightning (bottom area of jar), and rain (checkerboard). It is truly a magnificent piece by Les.
