This new bowl is hand coiled and traditionally fired with beautiful incising by Johnathan Naranjo. He portrays both ram and sheep so precisely. Their bodies gently fold over the widest shoulder area of the jar. Above the animals is a band of eternal spiral symbols. Johnathan explained to me – “I wanted the piece to have a mountain theme with texture. So, I left the top unpolished and created a rocky matte look. Big Horn sheep live in high elevation, so I thought it fitting to design the piece with this theme. The pottery told me what to do.” This coloration is derived from his firing, as it is taken out of the manure so that instead of turning black, it remains a darker brown. It is such a terrific “scene”. I continue to be so impressed with his incising abilities.
