This stunning clay effigy bear piece was hand coiled and incised by Johnathan Naranjo. The stylized bear is beautifully polished and features his deep brown tones. The piece is incised on one side with very lifelike bear designs, symbolizing the strength needed for a long winter. The evergreens are behind the two bears. On the other side, a beautiful scene of two fish and water covers most of the polished area. Johnathan is very skilled at fitting his imagery at the very right place on the bear. It is a wonderful free standing figure.

Johnathan Naranjo

Johnathan Naranjo was born in 1987. He is the son of well-known potter, Forrest Naranjo, and grandson of Bernice Naranjo. Even though he has been working only a few years he is clearly excelling in the family tradition of hand coiling and incising brown polished pottery. Born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1987, He began working with clay early in life and has now developed his own distinctive style. He specifically works on getting a dark brown finished pot rather than the usual black. His sgraffito work adds a mix of both contemporary and traditional designs. In 2013 Johnathan won the Tony Da Award at the Santa Fe Indian Market for his intricate and innovative style of pottery.
