This new jar is hand fired, incised with natural slips, and fired outdoors. It is fully polished to a deep black tone. It is exceptional. Jennifer has done a brilliant job of accurately depicting bumble bees and the flowers where they are perched. Varied subtle tones of oranges, yellows, greens and pinks enhance the beauty of this piece. Four bees are flying across the top of the jar. Jennifer has texturized the background of the “picture” and added a slip that makes it look like leather. The bottom of the piece shows more bees in flight. The shape of this jar lends itself so well to the elements she has etched all over the body of the form. The opening shows a bit of sparkle with some added mica. It is truly gorgeous. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Jennifer Tafoya”.

Jennifer Tafoya

Jennifer Tafoya is one of the brightest and most talented artists from Santa Clara pueblo working in the sgraffito area. Her incising work is particularly detailed and precise — revealing great accuracy and fabulous use of color. Her themes are of wildlife, fish, birds, and mountain animals in stunning realist detail. She combines this with fabulous traditional Santa Clara geometrics and symbols. Jennifer is the daughter of Emily Suazo-Tafoya and Ray Tafoya. In 2004, Jennifer was honored with BEST OF POTTERY at Indian Market, in Santa Fe. She continues to expand her repertoire of designs and shapes. Every new piece of incised pottery by Jennifer is unique and special. As her images continue to change, she continues to use natural slips and pigments that make for wonderful finished work!
