Ida has been working on a series of clay tiles for us. Each one is different, and each one depicts part of the Navajo ceremonial experiences. They are all done with all natural materials – the clay, the pigments and slips, and the firings. Each one has the titles on the back – naming the images she has painted. They look wonderful individually or as a group.
This tile is called “Water Creature.” Also taken from a sand painting, this is to summon the Gods and pray for rain during a drought when plants are scorched. There are usually four direction, like the four sacred frogs.
