This small new plate is hand coiled, painted and slipped with natural pigments and fired outside. The symbolic nature of this plate is fascinating. Debbie explained it to me this way: “I call this design two separate worlds of the Hopi people. The steps on one side represents the kivas and how the men pray in a circle. The small stars are for the nighttime when the prayers are held. The bottom half represents the wings of birds used in prayers for all different ceremonies.” The polychrome color patterns are executed so well. This is a wonderful example of Debbie’s work that represents her culture and heritage.
