Calvin is one of my favorite “canteen” creators. Hand coiled, like all his work it is eggshell thin. It is painted with bee-weed and also red slip is used. Calvin explains, “The water canteen is a prayer for prosperity with the colorful birds and rain birds and prayer feathers.” The painting is amazingly precise. The two clay bodies (Hopi and Laguna) give the piece a wood like appearance. It is simply gorgeous. It has a rounded bottom, so it is sitting on a Lucite stand. However, it can be hubg on the wall with its leather strap. It is signed on the bottom, “C Analla Paguate, N Mex Pueblo of Laguna ‘23”.

Calvin Analla

Calvin Analla is the brother of Yvonne Lucas, who is married to Hopi potter, Steve Lucas. He comes from the Paguate Village of the Laguna Pueblo. Like his sister and brother in law, Calvin’s work is traditionally hand built with natural materials, then hand painted, and then fired outdoors in a sheep dung firing pit. Recently, Calvin has been experimenting with his clay bodies. He is mixing Hopi clay with his Laguna clay, and the effect is amazing. It looks marbled, and mottled – almost having a wooden effect.
