In this elaborated carved jar, Alvina has used the sacred corn plant as the centerpiece. This is surrounded by eagle feathers. Corn is one of their symbols of life, and eagle feathers is one of the symbols for power. The back of this piece is a band of eagle feathers beneath a row of Kiva step designs. Her “sgraffito” work is done with a sharp instrument, often an old dental pick.
