Born in 1962, Eldred Quam just passed away on July 9, 2020. Eldred Quam, “Nagoosh” “Nugs” was an inspirational, noble, and wise member of the Zuni community. The first of the Quam children to start carving – back in 1974, Eldred made some interesting designs. He just recently brought back this special bear design carving. An old-style medicine bear with arched body, prominent (one-sided) heartline and a ‘needle-nose’ snout. Over time he simplified and re-stylized that design. It was often used in multi-carver fetish necklaces.
In addition to being fully engaged in Kiva duties and activities, Eldred was a member of the Zuni Cultural Resource Advisory Team (ZCRAT). He helped the teamwork with scholars, federal agencies, organizations, and park services that needed guidance and advice from Zuni leaders. We are saddened by his sudden death.
