Dean Haungooah

Santa Clara

Dean is the son of award-winning potters Art Cody (Kiowa) and Martha Suazo, He was orphaned early, and his aunts and uncles lovingly raised him. Still, it was his grandfather who encouraged him to make pottery.

Dean creates traditional Pueblo patterns with a contemporary look. He specializes in miniatures and uses clay only from Santa Clara Pueblo. He follows in his father’s footsteps and makes his father’s style of tightly incised pottery. He begins the process by harvesting his clay from the Santa Clara lands and then uses firing techniques that have been passed down for generations. After that process he uses sculpting tools with great precision to carve his unique designs into his pottery. Most of his designs are based on Mimbres and Ancestral Puebloan animals and insects.
