This new bowl by Dominique is hand coiled, carved, polished, and fired outdoors. She is known for her carved pottery that has sharply ridged melon swirls. She digs and coils native clays and adds micaceous clay slips for the surface. This bowl is a beautiful example of her excellent polishing skills. Fully polished on top and bottom, the center carved melon rib, representing a river, stands out so prominently. The melon rib section is slipped with mica. When Dominique fired this piece black, the ribs have a nearly silvery metallic appearance! The contrast of the polished and micaceous areas is bold and outstanding. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Dominique Toya”. It is always a pleasure to add a new piece of her work to the gallery, as she is one of the most outstanding Jemez potters working today.
