This new polychrome jar is sensational. Hand coiled and traditionally fired outside, this piece has so much going on. It is based on the work from the early innovators of the San Ildefonso painters. The shape is classic, and the fitted lid is a piece of art just by itself! The polishing of the black ribs with the contrast of the polished red top is fantastic. You can see the great birds depicted here with additional corn designs. There are clouds on the side of the bodies of the birds, coming out just below the beaks. There are also two bands of speckled painted areas. This piece really feels like Russell has used the clay, as a canvas his painting. When someone can go back in time, and revisit old style designs, but make them their own, it is an exciting thing to witness. This is an example of that creative skill.
