This is what Russell refers to as a “tall neck San Ildefonso jar” This is the type of jar that Rose Gonzales coiled. It is a rather dramatic shape, as the neck so gracefully rises. Even though it is based on such a traditional form, this piece seems to have a modern feel to it. The geometric designs in a triangular pattern show Russell’s skills at burnishing mica, and incising details while exposing the matte underneath clay body. The Heishi he has used on this piece is black jet. The silvery gun metal finish is spectacular. This is a strikingly beautiful new jar.
