John comes from a family rich in pottery tradition, including his father, Lorenzo, and his grandmother, Juanita. John has worked in the area of Indian affairs. With a BA from Stanford University, and a masters from MIT, in 1987, he was elected as President of the National Congress of American Indians.
Made in 2005, John has carved the avanyu (water serpent) circling the perimeter of this bowl. Rain clouds are an accent. Heishi beads circle as a border on the central band. The bowl is painted with a red slip, to contrast the beige and tan of the clay.
