Some of our favorite work from Grace Medicine Flower was when she was doing the basket weave designs. It looks like you can see an exposed basket lying just beneath the surface of the clay. The basket areas are carved vertically, incised horizontally and then painted with a clay slip. Grace was able to perfect that technique on this piece which she made in 2003. She then carved and incised three red medallions, each one featuring big horned sheep in different poses. The polishing is exceptional – the deep red just shines! On the bottom of the bowl, Grace has incised two more sheep on the matte tan clay. One can see why Grace has been a matriarchal leader in the world of Santa Clara pottery. She is an extraordinary person, as well as an artist.
