ED (DECEASED) & MARY AGUILAR

Ed Aguilar was born and raised on the Santo Domingo Reservation in New Mexico. He studied silversmithing when he was a teen at boarding school in Santa Fe. Like many other people from Santo Domingo, he worked as a fire fighter during his summer vacations. Before Ed could finish High School, his father was injured in an accident, and was unable to work. As the oldest son, Ed quit High School so he could support his mother, three sisters, and two brothers. He married at age 21, and has three children and now, years later, he and Mary have four grandchildren. Ed has always had a strong work ethic. He watched his uncle "pull silver," known as extruded silver. Ed started making round silver beads in this method, and stringing them much the same way his mother had strung her Heishi years before.
Ed began stringing his silver beads on foxtail, because a woman had requested a necklace that she could wear in the water, as she was a saltwater diver. Since foxtail is square, he had to make his beads square, and thus was the beginning of the "Aguilar Chain" style that we now see today. He often strung his silver beads on foxtail 15 - 16 hours a day, seven days a week! "I never get bored; if I did, I'd do something else !"
This is the first group of necklaces that Ed's widow, Mary has made. Following all the techniques from Ed, she and her grandson have successfully continued to make his square cut, hand pulled chains. We have them available is various lengths: 15", 16",18", 21", and 24" - They range in price from $67.50 (15") to $108 (24") Please contact us about any of them

HERBERT BEGAYE, NAVAJO

Herbert was born in Crownpoint, New Mexico and grew up in near-by Prewitt. He studied art and business at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado.
Althought he's only in his early thirties, he has already worked for over ten years in Sterling Silver and 14K gold. His brother, Albert, who works with traditional designs, was a major influence in his artistic development.
The simplicity and style of Herbert's designs attract many collectors. He is known for the silver overlay work. This 15" choker is a terrific example of that type of overlay work. It is most contemporary in feel, and can be worn with a variety of clothing.

GREG NASEYOMA, HOPI

Hopi silver overlay work is very precise. Overlay is constructed from two layers of silver. A design is traced on a sheet of silver, then carefully cut by hand, with a jeweler's saw. This top design layer is then soldered to the bottom sheet of silver. With a hammer and a small punch, texturing is then added. It is then hammered in to its final form, and oxidized, to make the negative forms blackened. It is a specific skill, well known in Hopi jewelry.

KENNETH & ANGIE AGUILAR, SANTO DOMINGO

I have been working with Kenneth for many years now. His brother Eddie was the designer of our hand pulled sterling silver chains, but Kenneth is known for his phenomenal stone work. He studied at the Institute of American Indian Art in Santa Fe from 1967 - 1971 and has been making jewelry for over 30 years. He learned the art of jewelry making from his mother, Ventura Aguilar.
My son once told a friend of mine - - "My mom has a problem with purple -- she can't get enough of it !" So imagine how I felt when Kenny and Angie put his down on my dining room table. This purple spiny oyster shell piece is so magnificent. Hard to work with, they have done an incredible job of making this symmetrical and smooth. This is a one of a kind creation by this remarkable couple.

STEVE ARIVISO, NAVAJO

Here is a funny story - Last week, while I was working at my desk, my cell phone rang. A polite gentleman said "I am looking for Jill Giller." so I said - "that's me !" He asked where I lived, and said he was a traditional Navajo jeweler who wanted to show me his work. So, I said "where are you now?" and he laughed, and replied "at your front door !" I am so glad I let him in, as Steve's work is wonderful. Having worked for years with Navajo jeweler, Harry Morgan, Steve has learned the trade very well. His work is in the "old style" of stamping, and his pins and brooches have an antique, satin finish. The best quality turquoise is used in his work. I am glad to be showcasing his new floral patterns in silver.

LAWERENCE BACA

Lawrence Baca is an award winning silversmith from Santa Fe, New Mexico. He has become one of the most collected silver artists in the region. Lawrence has been influenced by both antique Native American and Spanish silver work. His jewelry maintains a look reminiscent of the period of the Spanish conquistadors in Santa Fe. He seems to be able to combine the look of the early Native American silversmiths and the ecclesiastical themes of the early Spanish settlers. The Spanish Colonial Arts Society has purchased pieces to become part of their permanent collection at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe.
I met Lawrence and his wife Maria in 1997, when he won the Purchase Award at the Fine Arts Museum in Colorado Springs. I have been carrying his work ever since. ŒLawrence entered Spanish Market in Santa Fe for the first time in 1992, winning first place that year in the precious metals category for traditional silver work. Lawrence has said, "Anybody can learn the techniques if they practice long enough and take the right courses. Having the gift of design is what's very nice. Although my Hispanic roots reach back generations in Santa Fe, I didn't have much exposure to traditional Hispanic art growing up. I was first attracted to "Old Pawn" jewelry created by Native Americans. In my work, I try to create contemporary antiques having the comfortable feeling of family heirlooms."
Recognitions: 1994 Spanish Market - 1st Place Metals Purchase Award; 1995 Spanish Market - Purchase Award, 1996 Spanish Market - 1st Place Mixed Media; 1996 NM State Fair - Honorable Mention 1996 "Mayor's Excellence in Arts Award" Emerging Artist, City of Santa Fe Commission, 1997 1st Annual Indian/Spanish Market - Purchase Award; Taylor Museum, Colorado Fine Arts Market - E Boyd Memorial Award
Needless to say - we are so pleased to carry the beautiful silver work
These are what we call "Baca Beads" - Antique looking sterling silver beads alternating with random bits of colored stones. You could have one in every length in you wardrobe - as they go with everything that you wear! Can be worn casually, or to dress up a plain colored outfit. I have now outfitted my mother and sister in these beads - from choker length to longer strands. We just love Lawrence's work.

JOE & MARY CALABAZA, SANTO DOMINGO

Joe and Mary Calabaza, specialize in Super fine Heishi necklaces. They learned to make fine heishi from their grandfather, Patricio Calabaza. "He taught us how to take a simple piece of turquoise, mold it, and create a beautiful necklace. We started making our necklaces with a little heavier texture from turquoise, lapis, shells, coral, and other various stones, As years progressed, and over a long period of time and patience, we learned how to grind our stone to a finer quality.
Each piece of necklace has its own special unique quality behind it. We take a lot of pride and joy into our work. This type of art work has been passed down for many generations as we continue to pass it down to our children and grandchildren. It is important to us that we keep our art work alive, because not only does it bring us joy, but it is a part of who we are."
I was introduced to Joe and Mary by Russell Sanchez. He has been using their superfine heishi in his pottery, and it is just amazingly well crafted and beautiful. I am so pleased to add their work to our gallery. There are so few Santo Domingo jewelers who still hand drill each stone to create such a piece of beauty.
Here are two of the finest handmade necklaces I have had from Mary and Joe. The 10 strand Superfine 20" necklace is composed of their handcut Black jet that has been scattered with turquoise Heishi. The combination and feel of it is so soft, like wearing horse hair around your neck. The five strand 20" necklace is one I have been eagerly awaiting! It is handcut white clam shell with scattered turquoise. It is magnificent! Sometimes I am in such awe of the quality if work that Mary and Joe produce. They are truly one of a kind artists.

This is one of Harvey's most loved one-of-a-kind designs. The significance of CORN in the Native American Culture is so prevalent in many various art forms. Here Harvey has hand carved ears of corn in sterling silver and then matched them with the set of earrings. What is so nice about this necklace is how very flat it lies on the neck. It is so comfortable to wear -- yet makes such a statement. About 15 - 16" long, it sets inside a collar -- or on a flat high neck. Though he uses the ancient tufa cast technique of silversmithing, Harvey adds his own special contemporary feel to all his work. He cuts so deeply into the stone, and then with such precision, makes this piece textured and three dimensional. Pure elegance!

SPINY OYSTER JEWELRY

Some of the spiny oyster shell being used in the various Pueblos right now is absolutely stunning. Spiny oyster is a sea oyster whose name is derived from its relatively fierce appearance. Most oysters have rather drab, smooth shells. But not the colorful spiny oyster. It has several thick protrusions on the outer surface of its shell (think porcupine here). The colors can run the spectrum from bright yellow to deep purple with a range of burnt oranges and russet reds in between.
Here are two pair of earrings and one magnificent pin. The mosaic earrings are by Mary and Joe Calabaza (Santo Domingo) They are 1 3/4" long. The pin, in the center is by Navajo artist Kirk Bahe - TEN pieces of spiny oyster are embedded in this traditional silver brooch. The smaller earrings, with a silver bead in the center, are 3/4" long.

DAVID TUNE, NAVAJO/CREEK

David Tune is a new jeweler for us to carry at NAC. Since the sad death of our friend, Lynol Yellowhorse, I have not been able to find the right artist who specializes in cobblestone work. David's' work reminds me of Lynols' in terms of color, design work, placement and choice of stones and overall contemporary feel. David Tune, of Creek and Navajo descent, was born July 21,1955, in Winslow Arizona. He was raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Oklahoma.           David's motivation to create jewelry began in 1976, when he was commissioned to design the jewelry for the March of Dimes Poster Child and President Ford's senate.
David has been creating jewelry for over 16 years, as well as teaching High School for two of those years. In 1987, after winning countless awards, he was forced to resign himself from his art due to cancer. He was cured of his cancer by his uncle, and with pride and self-determination, returned in 1994 to his passion of creating beautiful pieces of jewelry.
This set is simple and understated, yet so well made. The pendant (2" long) is made of turquoise, lapis, coral, spiny oyster shell, and silver. The matching earrings (1 3/4" long) have a bit of green turquoise in them. The extra stamped work on the side makes it quite appealing. I am glad to have found David'' work.

#JEW946 -
Price: $400 for the set
